Winter Home Maintenance Tips

House with snow

When’s the last time you checked your gutters.

Many homeowners skip out on home maintenance best practices, but regular maintenance is one of the best ways to keep your home running well for years, protecting your investment.

As fall sets in and colder weather approaches, here’s what you can do to keep your home safe and secure:

  1. Aerate your lawn and clear leaves
  2. Have your furnace serviced (and if you have a fireplace, get it inspected and cleaned).
  3. Inspect and repair the caulking around your windows and doors.
  4. Install storm windows.
  5. Power wash your home, repair siding, and paint trim, if needed.
  6. Drain and winterize your outdoor plumbing (sprinkler systems, spigots, pools, etc) and insulate outdoor pipes and faucets.
  7. Repair cracks in your driveway and sidewalks.
  8. Check for water heater leaks.
  9. Replace the batteries in and test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
  10. Cover your A/C condenser unit.
  11. Inspect your roof, downspouts, and gutters (and repair any damage).
  12. Check your gutters for ice dams.
  13. Check your basement for leaks during thaws.
  14. Snake your tub, sink, and shower drains to unclog them.
  15. Clear dust from your bathroom exhaust fans.
  16. Clean your refrigerator drip trays and vacuum the condenser coils.
  17. Keep sidewalks, stairs, and driveways clear of snow and ice.

Again, regular maintenance is one of the best ways to keep your home running well for years and protecting your investment.
